lately it seems that people have forgotten that words actually MEAN things…

my housekeepers were scheduled to come today (lovely timing, just before Mother’s Day 🙂 ), and the reminder message on my answering machine from the main office said they’d be here “between 4 and 5 PM.” okay, not ideal, b/c that starts to get into my dinner prep time, but we can make it work, as I’d really like a clean house for the weekend… so I make it a POINT to go out and get my errands done early in the afternoon so I can be home before 4; after I finally get the groceries unloaded and put away, I check my answering machine, and — you guessed it — the maid service called at 2:45 PM to tell me that their housekeepers were at my home and couldn’t get in (DUH! I hadn’t made arrangements to let them in b/c they weren’t supposed to be there for another HOUR at least!!), so I’d have to reschedule for another day… I called the office, attempted to politely express my displeasure at the situation, indicated that when I’m told “between 4 and 5 PM” I EXPECT “between 4 and 5 PM” and had arranged my day accordingly, so I was quite upset that they didn’t mean what they said when they specified the time my housekeepers would arrive. I did reschedule for them to come Monday morning, and the girl at the office apologized profusely for the mistake, but obviously that doesn’t help for the weekend (it’s a good thing we’re not having company at our house this weekend; we’re all gathering at my parents’ house instead)…

then, my DH had been exchanging email w/yet another realtor out here (the house-hunting saga continues, oh joy) and was FINALLY able to get out of the guy that the “mother-in-law apartment” as stated on the MLS listing was in fact unfinished and currently being used as a workshop…! look, if you want to sell a house, maybe you should be HONEST about how the house is ACTUALLY configured, not how it could POSSIBLY be configured after an additional $15k in remodeling… (at least we hadn’t wasted a LOT of time on this property, but the only way we would’ve pursued that house is if it had actually already had the MIL apt it was advertised as having)

PLEASE, it really isn’t all that hard: choose your words carefully, and mean what you say — it will make your life and the lives of those w/whom you associate so much more efficient and pleasant instead of having to constantly untangle words that have been twisted to fit the expediency of the moment or trying to decipher which words have just been casually tossed out w/o any thought to their implication in reality…
